Bottlebrush

BottlebrushCallistemon citrinus, also known as Crimson Bottlebrush is a shrub in the family Myrtaceae. Though it is not a native of California, it is totally at home here. Frankly it is under valued as a landscape shrub.

 

 

It provides tons of ample color, in RED late in the summer when other blooms have long dissappered. It requires low water usage after it is established. It is a favorite of honey bees, and hummingbirds. What is not to like. 

Gallardia

Heavy Rain Gaillardia (Blanket flower) form wiry, branched stems with lanceolate to linear basal leaves. The plant grows to 1 1/2 to 2 ft tall, with bright daisy-like single color and bi-color blooms in shades from gold to red to brown. The flowers bloom in the late spring and fall.  They will grow under very harsh and dry conditions, forming mounds, 8 - 18 inches high.

 



Gaillardia (Blanket flower) is a genus of drought-tolerant annual and perennial plants from the sunflower family (Asteraceae), native to North America. It was named after M. Gaillard de Charentonneau, an 18th-century French magistrate who was a patron of botany. The common name refers to the inflorescence's resemblance to brightly patterned blankets made by native Americans.

Jupiter's Beard

Call of Duty 4 Centranthus ruber, or Jupiter’s Beard is a popular garden flower. It grows as a perennial plant, usually as a subshrub though it can take any form from a herb to a shrub depending on conditions; the plants are usually woody at the base.

 

 

The flowers have a strong and somewhat rank scent: they are pollinated by both bees and butterflies and the plant is noted for attracting insects. Freely reseeds and naturalizes in many places, it can be aggressive if not watched.

Coreopsis

Call of Duty 4 Every garden should include Coreopsis verticillata 'Zagreb' is
long blooming easy-care perennial. Yellow flowers through early summer.  'Zagreb' has larger mustard colored flowers than the ‘Moonbeam’ and is a much hardier plant in northern climates.18-24 in. tall in full sun.

 

Goes completely dormant in the winter months, don’t confuse it with a weed when it sprouts in the spring.

Salvia 'Hot Lips' a tough and brilliantly colored plant for your sunny spots

Silent HillSalivia 'Hot Lips" is easily one of my favorite salvias.

In the Sacramento valley 'Hot Lips' really must have full sun, & drainage is likewise a must. It may tolerate a bit of shade. It is drought tolerant, & is one of the sturdiest plants in the platners, getting ahead of many summer bloomers.

Coreopsis 'Zagreb' - is a  rhizomatous perennial

Call of Duty 4 Easily grown in dry to medium moisture, well-drained soil in full sun. Thrives in poor, sandy or rocky soils with good drainage. Tolerant of heat, humidity and drought.

'Zagreb' spreads in the garden by rhizomes and self-seeding, particularly in moist fertile soils, spreading slightly each year.

 

‘Zagreb’ coreopsis is a rhizomatous perennial which typically grows in dense, bushy clumps to 1.5' tall  and features bright yellow, daisy-like flowers (1-2" diameter) with untoothed rays and darker yellow center disks. Goes completely dormant during the winter, and many times is confused with a up and coming weed in the springtime.
